My academic adventure started at Michigan State University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Merchandising Management with an emphasis in Clothing Design. Then, I started my family and volunteering in the classroom during my children’s preschool and kindergarten years. Eventually, there was a need for a long term sub, so my next adventure was teaching kindergarten. That was followed by teaching art and music. I was hooked on teaching.
In order to continue the journey, I completed my Masters in Elementary Education at the University of Phoenix Online while teaching full time in a kindergarten and first grade multiage classroom. After receiving my teaching certification in Michigan, we moved to Wisconsin. I then completed the early childhood program through Viterbo to meet the requirements for my teaching license. While working with kindergarten and first grade students, I fell in love with teaching reading. This led to my pursuit of my Reading 316 licensure.
Since arriving in Wisconsin, I have taught first and second grades and currently hold the position of Literacy Specialist at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Green Bay. For the last three years, I have been working with the Green Bay Area Catholic Education (GRACE) school district to complete training in the Wilson Reading System and Fundation classroom curriculum. Wilson Reading is an Orton Gilligham based approach to help struggling readers and writers. I am currently an In-District Trainer for the Fundation curriculum, Level 1 certified in the Wilson Reading System and working toward my Level 2 certification. I provide reading instruction to students, coaching to teachers and support parents when needed. Over the past few years, I have collaborated, with Dr. Tynisha Meidl, from St. Norbert College to provide pre-service teachers overviews of curriculums and field experience opportunities while providing additional reading instruction for students.
As my work is completing for my 316 licensure, I am looking forward to the future of working toward my 317 licensure. It is my hope to help students, teachers and parents by continuing my professional development at Viterbo University within the next year.
